Our History + Style

Alexander+Roberts began in 1947 when Alexander Harris, a Polish survivor of World War II, founded the company under the name General Tours. His belief was simple but powerful: travel should bring people together and foster understanding between cultures.

Guided by that idea, we became pioneers in international travel. During the Cold War, we introduced the first tours to the Soviet Union, opening doors for curious American travelers to explore places few had seen. Over the decades, we’ve continued that same spirit of discovery, creating journeys to far-flung destinations across all seven continents for travelers eager to experience the world more deeply.

In 1972, we became a founding, bonded member of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA), an organization dedicated to integrity and financial responsibility in travel, principles we proudly uphold today.

For nearly 80 years, our focus has remained the same: understanding what travelers truly want from their journeys. The result is a carefully crafted portfolio of small-group and privately guided experiences designed to help our guests explore the world with confidence, comfort, and meaningful connection.

Thoughtfully Designed
Our original itineraries combine iconic destinations with places that remain refreshingly undiscovered.

Personal and Flexible
We take pride in understanding the unique interests of every traveler and tailoring our journeys to create experiences that feel personal.

Refined Travel Experiences
Our small-group journeys, always with never more than 16 guests, and our private tours feature authentic cultural encounters, exceptional local guides, luxury hotels, and memorable dining, all shaped by eight decades of expertise.

Exceptional Value and Service
Every Alexander+Roberts journey includes comprehensive guided sightseeing and distinctive experiences led by local experts who know their homeland intimately. Our guides speak English fluently and bring warmth, insight, and genuine cultural connection to every destination.

Along the way, we select accommodations that enhance the journey from evocative luxury hotels and historic boutique properties to the finest safari camps and elegant small ships.

Dining is equally important to us, and we seek out restaurants that showcase the very best of regional cuisine.

At Alexander+Roberts, travel is more than seeing the world, it’s about connecting with the people and cultures that define it. That belief remains at the heart of every journey we create.

80 Years of Travel Innovation

Right After World War II

When Alexander Harris arrived in New York from Poland to work for an uncle, the ravages of the recent war were hardening into a new cold version of mistrust and hostility. In his Twenties and filled with optimism, Alexander knew that travel could be a great way to break the growing walls of distrust in the world. Thus, Alexander approached the Eisenhower White House and was granted unique approval to operate the first scheduled tours to the Soviet Union.

South America in the 1950's

Empowered by American enthusiasm for the new United Nations, we headed to the 1954 UNESCO Conference in Montevideo as America’s Flying Ambassadors… more than 70 years of journeys throughout South America have since followed that first trip.

East Africa in the 1970's

On safari in the late 1960’s, Alexander noticed that only the wealthiest could afford this life enhancing experience. Determined to make the thrill of Africa more widely accessible, by 1973 we were operating sold-out Pan Am charters to Kenya and Tanzania, the first of their kind.

China and Beyond since the 1980's

Not long after President Nixon’s ground-breaking trip to China, we began operating tours for Americans eager to see its historical grandeur for themselves. Now our luxury small groups and private  journeys have expanded from China to all of Asia, from India to Southeast Asia and  the charming heritage of Japan.

The 21st Century

We’ve continued to innovate in this new century and were the first to limit its luxury small groups to never more than 16 guests. In 2014, we introduced a new identity, Alexander+Roberts, inspired by the first names of Alexander and of its second-generation leader, Robert Drumm. Attentive to its guests and supportive of communities and wildlife throughout the world, Alexander+Roberts approaches the future with the same kind of optimism that motivated Alexander so many decades ago.
