The Blue Lagoon + Embarkation

Ocean Atlantic

After breakfast and check-out, we’ll take you to one of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders. The geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon originate more than 6,000 feet below ground and reach the Earth’s surface at temperatures that usually range from 98 º to 104º. On its way to the surface, these waters absorb silica and other minerals that give the Lagoon its distinctive and captivating blue color. After this delightful experience, we’ll take you to the pier to board the Ocean Atlantic. Throughout their cruise, A+R guests will enjoy complimentary house wine, beer and soft drinks with all shipboard lunches and dinners. Meals B+D

As we near this archipelago just off Iceland’s southern coast, keep your eyes sharp for marine birds like the puffin and graceful gannet. We’ll pass close to Surtsey Island c, born of volcanic activity just 50 years ago, to go ashore on Heimaey where a 1973 eruption buried 400 homes under a deep layer of ash. Art + Culture of East Iceland

Go ashore in Djúpivogur with its centuries-old trading history to see its fine old homes and to experience its modern cultural scene. Unique outdoor art installations including one by famed Icelandic artist Sigurður Guðmundssonand are among the highlights. At the Cultural Center, set in an 18th-century house, you’ll find more artwork on display along with exhibits on village history and culture.

After the Cultural Center visit, you can join an available excursion to get close to the Vatnajökull Glacier. Covering more than 8% of Iceland’s land mass, this veritable ice cap is the largest glacier in Europe. Venturing in a 4WD Super Jeep, this excursion takes you to Hoffellsjökull, one of the outlet glaciers that winds its way down from the vast expanse of Vatnajökull to flow into a pristine lagoon. Skjálfandi Bay + Grimsey Island

Ocean Atlantic

Having rounded Iceland’s rugged northeast coast, we navigate this morning into Skjálfandi Bay where humpback and Minke whales are regularly spotted. Huge blue whales and magnificent sperm whales also come to feed in the nutrient-rich waters of the Bay. This afternoon finds us on Grímsey Island. Situated about 25 miles off the northern coast of Iceland and surrounded by the vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean, Grímsey is home to about one hundred people, mostly fishermen and their families, who live in a small prospering village by the harbor. It’s a welcoming community full of life, but the island is perhaps even better known for its seabirds – up to a million of them who arrive in the summer to nest in the high cliffs that surround much of the island. Atlantic puffin, black guillemot, common murre, wheatear, snow bunting and large tern colonies are what you can expect to see today. Meals B+L+D
